Saami traditional knowledge in the work of Saami Climate Council

This report presents the expectations of the Saami traditional knowledge holders on the work of the Saami Climate Council and proposals on how Saami traditional knowledge should be considered in the work of the Climate Council. The material is based on a workshop organised by a project: PRESAAMI2- Establishing the Saami Climate Council’s knowledge base for the Saami traditional knowledge holders. The main goal of the workshop was to co-produce knowledge in collaboration with the Saami traditional knowledge holders and the scientific community for the work of the Saami Climate Council. The information and proposals produced by the Saami Climate Council are expected to have a concrete impact on decision-making, climate action and to work of the decision-makers and authorities. The Climate Council is expected to take practical measures to mitigate climate change and enable climate adaptation in a culturally sustainable way in the Saami homeland. The Climate Council should create the conditions for Saami traditional knowledge to survive and develop in climate change. The Climate Council is expected to organise workshops supporting the co-production of knowledge and to collaborate with the holders of traditional knowledge in project activities and other activities of the Climate Council. Decision-makers and authorities are expected to implement the proposals made by the Climate Council and to consider the knowledge base it produces. The Climate Council should actively participate in the work to develop the role of scientific panels and to develop collaboration between the scientific panels.
